Second, or middle conga called segunda or tres golpes. The highest pitched conga drum is called quinto, from the Spanish requinto. Claves Sticks struck together, usually made of the wood (a common species is granadilla). Guataca or asadon Originally, the head of a hoe. It is struck with a piece of iron. Maracas A shaker with one end, made from the fruit of the calabash tree. Another type of maraca is ericunde, which is double ended. Palitos A pair of sticks used to strike either the sides of drums (cascara). Palitos are used to strike the guagua, or cata, a piece of bamboo. Guagua/Cata A piece of bamboo
about 15 cm in diameter and ½ meter long. You use two drumsticks
or palitos to play it. |
